BUTTER INDUSTRY

INCREASED PRODUCTION MAY BE REQUIRED IN DOMINION. REQUEST FROM BRITAIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An announcement that the United Kingdom Ministry of Food had indicated that it might be desirable for New Zealand to increase the production of butter and proportionately decrease cheese production in the coming season was made last night by the Minister of Marketing, Mr Barclay. He said that during the past year the amount of cheese that had been available for export to the United Kingdom' from North America had greatly increased and it was the desire of the United Kingdom Government that New Zealand consider the possibility of making available an increased quantity of butter. The Minister added that no final decision, however, would be reached till after further negotiation with the United Kingdom Government, and after the matter had been fully considered by the Government in consultation with the Dairy Industry Council. “Producers are therefore advised,” said Mr Barclay, “to continue their normal farm activities with the assurance that as soon as.a decision is reached a full statement will be made.”
