THREAT TO MOSCOW
THE FIGHTING AT GJATSK SEPARATE RED ARMY GROUP MEETING NAZI THRUST. ENEMY TRYING TO EXPLOIT SALIENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 2. The Stockholm correspondent of “The Times’’ raises the question of whether the fighting at Gjatsk, which was reported yesterday, indicates that a new German offensive against Moscow is coming. The Germans at Gjatsk will meet a new separate Red Army group under General Zhukov, which will act independently of the Ukraine, and which has not been seriously engaged since the winter. The Russian positions north and south of the Smolensk-Viazma bottleneck have not receded much, if anything at all, whereas the Germans, who are based on the railway, which has facilitated operations, have elbowed the Russians outward, converting the large Viazma-Gjatsk-Rjev sack into something more resembling a deep bulge toward Moscow, which would be an advantageous salient for a new offensive against Moscow.
