CARTERTON
RED SHIELD HUT SERVICE FOR SOLDIERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) During the earthquake when soldiers were on picket duty at night in Carterton the Red Shield Hut, conducted by the Salvation Army, kept, open all night, serving hot drinks, pics, and cakes to the men. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, placed quantities of tea, cake, and pies at the disposal of the Salvation Army. As- the balance was provided by Salvationists and friends the Red Shield Hut was able to run a free- service. The Hut was kept heated, and many soldiers, tired out by long hours, preferred to sleep their free time in the Red Shield Hut. During the day, when many of the soldiers were engaged in. demolition work, the Red Shield Hut became a centre for morning and afternoon tea, or for hurried “snacks,” no charge being made. Recently, Captain Waite, wife of the officer in charge, re-organised the working of the Hut, and consequently an improved service has attracted larger numbers of men. A feature of the refreshments is the “Army Cornish Pasties,” made by Mrs Waite, assisted by Mesdames Good, Stark, Hart and Baldwin. These are now well known to all local servicemen. Soldiers from the Middle East, airmen who have seen service overseas, and one sailor who has been in action with the British Navy, are among those who have expressed their appreciation of the service at the Red Shield Hut. A new games room is being opened, and the Hut is being renovated and decorated in an endeavour to make the place more cheery and attractive. The Salvation Army is grateful for the assistance given previously in the way of furnishings, but further couches, easy chairs, and small tables- are urgently required. The Wairarapa- Power Board has been approached with regard to the installation of heating points, radiators, and a water heater. Two members of the Board, Messrs Eiooth and Hart, and the Se-cretary-Manager (Mr Geo. Brown) have the matter in hand and it is hoped that something will soon be done. A combination water boiler and pie-heater is urgently needed. The Salvation Army is grateful to themany persons who have so freely given their support and service in making the Carterton Red Shield Hut “a home away from home” for the- soldiers.
