LOCAL AND GENERAL

Vital Statistics. The vital statistics registered in Masterton last month were (the figures for the corresponding period last year being given in parentheses):—Births, 19 (23); deaths, 9 (12); marriages, 11 (5). Presbyterian Church Services. Presbyterian services will be conducted by the Rev. D. McNetlr on Sunday at Lansdowne (11 a.m. and 7 p.m.), Rangitumau (1.30 p.m.), and Mauriceville (3 p.m.). There will be no service at Kopuaranga on Sunday. Doctors and Panel Practice. “Are doctors, some of whom are making up to £5OOO a year from their panel practice, still being paid 15s a year for men whose names appear on their lists but who are now serving in the armed forces?” asked Mr Kidd (Opposition, Waitaki), in notice of a question put in Parliament yesterday to the Minister of Health. Married Man Missing. Stanley John Friis, a married man of 50 years, employed by the Wellington municipal milk department, has been missing from his home in Queen’s Road, Lower Hutt, since Thursday, June 25. On that morning he left home to return to work after being absent for a week through illness. He cycled to a dairy in High Street to order the family’s bread and pick up the morning newspaper. Then, instead of continuing as usual to the railway station, he turned up the Hutt Valley. He has not since been seen by friends or relatives. Union Protest. At a general meeting of the Ngakawau Miners’ Industrial Union of Workers, Nelson, the following resolution was passed: “That while agreeing to allow the national secretary, Mr A. McLagan, leave of absence to join the War Cabinet, we do not agree to the unconstitutional method that the national council wants the unions to adopt regarding the different national, positions. We are of opinion that the national secretary should resign his position for the duration of the war. Unless this procedure is adopted, this union does not intend to take nominations for national positions.” increased Wool Price, An endeavour by Mr Sutherland (Opposition, Hauraki) to discuss the payment of the 15 per cent increase to woolgrowers authorised by the United Kingdom Government was ruled out of order by the Chairman of Committees, Mr McKeen in Parliament yesterday. He said there was no vote on the Wool Industry Account which was under consideration. “When every other section of the community was receiving an increase in their income there was no talk of inflation,” declared Mr Sutherland. “When the wool price increase was granted the Minister of Marketing raised the question of inflation.” The chairman pointed out that the 15 per cent increase had been provided by the British Government and could not be discussed. A similar ruling was applied by the chairman when Mr Roy (Opposition, Clutha) made reference to the same subject.
