BESTIAL HORROR
OF NAZI POLICY IN GREECE MANY THOUSANDS STARVED TO DEATH. BUT MORALE OF PEOPLE UNBROKEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 30. In a broadcast in’London last evening the Greek Minister of Information said, “We shall never forget the ominous words of the Nazi commander in Athens ,who said last summer, ‘This people is a conquered people. Those who have been rich hitherto shall be reduced, to poverty, and the poor shall die of starvation’; and in preaching this gospel of bestial horror, which is so characteristic of the Nazi ideology, for once this German spoke the truth.” In Athens alone, the Minister said,' it was officially confirmed that between October and January 40,000 persons died of starvation, and in March it had risen to an average of 500 deaths a day. In addition typhus was now taking heavy toll. In spite of all this, the morale of the people was unbroken. In the mountains the guerillas were harassing the Germans, and the Germans were retaliating by shooting hostages.
