MAMMOTH BATTLE
RAGING LN THE KURSK AREA Soviet Reinforcemesits Thrown In STRUGGLE MOUNTING TO A CLIMAX* MANY 'TANKS KNOCKED OUT BY RUSSIANS (By Telegraph.—Press Association—Copyright.) ((Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 3. The mammoth tank battle which started on the Kursk front on Monday has been raging at full strength during the past 24 hours, with General von Bock making an effort to isolate Marshal Timoshenko's Southern Army from General Zhukov’s central front forces. (Russian reinforcements have reached e the Kursk area, and the fighting is mounting to a climax. The Germans are employing new methods, using twelve and six barrel mortars. They are also employing tanks with trapdoors, which open when passing over trenches, enabling the crew to fire on Russians crouching in the trenches. The Russians formerly waited until the tanks had passed them, and '■ then attacked them with Molotov cocktails, but now it is a race as to who fires first. The Russians, energetically counter-attacking, recaptured positions in several sectors, and the Germans were forced to fling in reserves. General von Bock is switching his attacks from one section to another, i nan attempt to find a weak spot. One of the most important actions has been in German attempts to cross a river. The Russians in two days knocked out 170 tanks, when throwing back the Germans. They also claim that 7000 Germans were killed in two days in one sector. The Russian Air Force retains its air superiority. The Germans have already lost 150 planes. A Soviet communique states that, in the Kursk direction, throughout the day, large-scale tank battles were fought. On the central front, stubborn fighting has developed against the attacking German forces. At Sebastopol, Russia ntroops are fighting hand-to-hand engagements on the outskirts of the city. No material change has taken place on other sectors of the front.
