CONDUCT OF TROOPS
FURTHER IMPROVEMENT WANTED IN AUSTRALIA. REPRESSION OF ILLICIT TRADE IN LIQUOR. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.50 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 2. The behaviour of Australian troops has improved considerably in recent weeks, but the Army authorities arc still not satisfied and will insist on better conduct by men on leave. An Army spokesman said there was still too much excessive drinking and hotels which did not co-operate in checking it would be declared out of bounds for all soldiers. If sly-grog selling did not diminish greatly, the Army authorities would seek power to arrest any person, selling bottled liquor to anyone in uniform off licensed premises. The spokesman added: “On one Sunday night, the military police examined a troop train, taking men back from leave in Melbourne and found 300 full bottles and an expensive brand of whisky. Most of the trouble was caused by the drinking of wine and spirits. It was discovered that one brand of wine sold to soldiers contained 45 per cent, crude spirit.”
