o GAP IN THE CHEKIANG RAILWAY IN SPITE OF JAPANESE ATTACKS. LOSSES & GAINS ON BOTH SIDES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) CHUNGKING, July 2. The High Command declared that Japanese columns endeavouring to close the gap in the Chekiang-Kiangsi railway were successfully checked. The Japanese asserted that the gap was closed, but a 25-mile section from lyang to Shangjao was not taken, although the Japanese attacked vigorously from both towns. The Chinese admit the loss of the Kiangsi.towns of Poyang. in the north, and Tsungjen, in the south. The Chinese have recaptured two towns near the Honan-Shansi border, where a battle has raged for the past fortnight. A Chinese spokesman said that the Japanese were now concentrating their pressure on Kiangsi, in a semi-circular movement south of the railway and centering on Lichwan, in an effort to trap large Chinese forces.
