PRIVATE MOTOR CARS
QUESTION OF LICENSING NO GUARANTEE TO OWNERS. ANNOUNCEMENT BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. No guarantee could be given to motorists that private cars would be permitted to operate for the full period for which they had been relicensed, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Semple, in replying in the House of Representatives yesterday to suggestions by Opposition members that a clear statement should be made. Mr Goosman (Opposition, Waikato) said it was unfair to accept the licensing fees without telling the people where they stood. “How do members suggest it is possible for the Government, to give any guarantee as desired?” asked Mr Semple. “The whole position depends on the supplies of benzine and the instructions of those who control its supply to the Dominion.” Replying to Opposition comments that additional traffic inspectors and the purchase of six new cars estimated to cost £2OOO seemed unnecessary in view of the reduced road traffic, Mr Semple said the inspectors were busier today than ever before. They were responsible for supervising the reserve stocks of benzine held in pumps, making surveys regarding petrol and tires, and training 3000 emergency traffic officers.
