Mr R. Taiboys, of Wanganui, was a visitor at yesterday’s luncheon of the Masterton Rotary Club. The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital yesterday of Mr George Peter Hansen formerly of Nireaha. Three sons of Mr and Mrs Shepherd Smith, formerly a Masterton watchmaker, are serving in the British forces. Two of these, Jim and Jack Smith, are in the air force in England. Sergeant Jack Smith was recently awarded the D.F.M. All of them attended the Masterton West School. Mr Arthur Douglas Wright, Liverpool Street, Wanganui, died on Saturday. The youngest member of a pioneering family, Mr Wright was born in Wanganui, and as a young man went into business in Ohakune, remaining there for many years. He later took up business in Palmerston North, retiring two years ago and going to Wanganui. The late Mr Wright’s father came to New Zealand in the early days with a brother, Mr E. C. Wright, who was M.P. for Ashburton and whose daughter is Lady Nosworthy, Ashburton. The appointment of Mrs Vida Jowett, Wellington, as Commandant of the New Zealand Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, the new branch of the Army to which women who are recruited for the Army will belong, was announced by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, yesterday. Mrs Jowett, who is the wife of Mr Harold Jowett, a well-known Wellington barrister and solicitor, has been president of the Wellington branch of the Plunket Society for a number of years, and is a member of the Dominion executive and the Dominion council of that body. She is also a member of the Dominion executive of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary.
