CARTERTON & DISTRICT
CLEARING WORK PROCEEDING. The work of clearing debris from the front of the W.F.C.A. Ltd.’s premises in Carterton has been almost completed. The parapet on the eastern wall of the P. and A. building has been removed. Numbers of bricklayers and labourers are busy restoring damage at the Brick and Tile Works, Rutland Road. Members of the committee of the Carter Old Men’s Home paid a visit of inspection to the home yesterday and found all the chimneys at the institution broken. Otherwise little damage was done. The question of topping the tall pine trees on the southern boundary was considered. Representations have been made to have two chimneys repaired urgently, as there were few facilities for cooking meals and giving warmth. A visitor to the Hinakura district reports much damage in this area. Large cracks aye to be seen in the hilly country and in places water and sand have been emitted from crevices caused by the earthquake.
