WOMEN RECRUITS

NEEDED FOR ARMED FORCES appeal by prime minister. A WAR EFFORT DEMAND. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An appeal for women recruits for service in the armed forces was made last night by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. He said that New Zealand’s total war effort, which needed the best possible use of men, women, materials and machinery, demanded a large recruiting of women for various duties in the Navy, Army and Air Force within the Dominion. “The urgent call today is for women 18 to 45 years of age,” said Mr Fraser. “Positions are available for all types of employment in the ai’med forces, such as shorthand-typists, telegraphists, cooks and mess hands. Indeed, the need ranges as far as anti-aircraft batteries for which some of the work is suitable for women. Some of the jobs will require women of good educational qualifications, particularly in mathematics. “Many of the recruits will replace men required for harder war work. Every country that is now involved in the war is obliged to make the utmost use of its woman-power. New Zealanders know full well the far-ranging activities of the women of Great Britain in the huge co-operative efforts for victory. I feel sure that the women of New Zealand who have already ’ responded admirably to many calls on their practical patriotism will not fall below the high standard set in the Mother Country. “Of course, it is not intended to take women who are engaged on essential production or who have been trained for important occupations in which they have replaced men. There is, however, no reason why women in these industries should not make application, as it may’be possible at a later date to release some of them for service in the armed forces.” Application forms for enlistment are obtainable at all offices of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary throughout the Dominion.
