TIMELY WORD

SPOKEN BY WENDELL WILLKIB avoidance of unjust CRITICISM. OF BRITISH WAR EFFORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 1. “It is the plain duty of every loyal United States citizen to scotch allpinjust criticism of the British war effoit, which invariably crops up whenever British arms suffer reverses,” said Mr Wendell Willkie. Citing his personal experiences in London during air raids, Mr Willkie told a group of business and financial leaders that the English were a brave, self-sustaining people. Reverses such as Singapore or Crete only made the British more determined than ever to see the war through to victory. “We must remember,” he said, “that we have not done wonders ourselves yet. We have come in late, and thus far there is comparatively little disturbance of life here.”
