PIONEER’S BIRTHDAY

MRS M. WILTON. Today is the 87th birthday of Mrs M. Wilton, one of Masterton’s few remaining original settlers, who has seen its progress from the infancy stage to its present importance among inland towns. As the infant daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Jacob Matthews, she first traversed from England to America and with her parents arrived in New Zealand in the sailing ship Westminster, in 1856. The diamond wedding celebration of November, .1937, and the death of her husband (Mr Charles Francis Wilton) in February, 1939, mark the two greatest family events in the pioneer life of one who has always placed service before self over a very long period of years.

Living in peaceful retirement at the home of her daughter, Mrs Robert Harris, “Oaklea,” Opaki Road, her many friends and relatives are making this their place of call today.
