CARTERTON
BUSINESS COMMUNITY SERVICE IN EMERGENCY. (“Times-Age” Special.) Despite the disruption caused by the earthquake in the business area of the town shops -wherever possible are open for trade and an excellent service is being given the public in the circumstances. Studying the interests of the public the business firms are making every effort to meet their requirements as speedily as possible, and the business community has certainly risen to the occasion in carrying out its responsibilities to the public in an emergency. ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE. Arch. Druid Bro. Basil Neilsen presided over the meeting of Totara Lodge last night. Bro. Alfred J. Ordish advised that he was on active service. Grand Lodge forwarded £l2O in settlement of a death benefit in connection with a deceased member of the lodge. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £299 7s 2cl were passed for payment. The quarterly return for May 31 was read showing that there were 226 financial benefit members on the roll. Two members declared on the sick funds of the lodge and three declared off.
Borough Council. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council will be held in the Council Chambers tonight. Registration of Cars. The Carterton Post Office staff was kept very busy yesterday registering motor cars and motor vehicles. Personal Items. Mrs R. G. Hastie, of Hamilton, is visiting Carterton and is the guest of Mrs D. Jensen. Aircraftman Fred Hill is on leave in Carterton and staying with Mr and Mrs Stan Hill, Wakelin Street. Mrs G. S. Cook, of Otaki, was a visitor to Carterton over the weekend. Mr and Mrs S. Collie, “The Cliffs,” Masterton, have returned home after having spent a holiday in Levin, where they were the guests of the latter’s parents, Mr and Mrs Stan Green. At the conclusion of the morning service at the Methodist Church., Carterton, on Sunday, the congregation expressed its appreciation of the Rev G. S. Cook’s ministry during the time he has been in Carterton relieving while the Rev J.'A. Daglish has been in camp at Feilding. He was presented with a gift. Mr Cook thanked the congregation and stated that he had been pleased to give his services. During his short stay in Carterton he had made many close friends. Mr Daglish will take up his parish duties on Sunday week. Next Sunday Lieut-Colonel Millar, of the military camp, will conduct the morning services at the church. | Enjoyable Recital. At the Masonic Hall last night, the Rev. G. S. and Mrs Cook assisted by Mr L. E. Thomas (vocalist) gave an excellent musical and elocutionary recital, which was greatly enjoyed. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, introduced Mr Cook to the audience. At the conclusion of the entertainment Mr Thomas thanked those present for their attendance. As a result of the recital the local Patriotic Funds will benefit.
