JAPANESE LOSSES
IN MIDWAY ISLAND BATTLE MORE COMPLETE LIST FOUR AIRCRAFT-CARRIERS SUNK. HEAVY CRUISERS & DESTROYERS SHARE SAME FATE. PEARL HARBOUR (Hawaii, June 28. A statement issued by the Navy says that analysis of the reports of the Battle of Midway Island reveals the following more complete list of losses inflicted on the Japanese:— Four aircraft-carriers—Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Kiryu—sunk; all their aircraft, totalling 275, lost; and all the plane crews lost except a few who were picked up by Japanese ships. Two, probably three, battleships damaged, one severely. Two heavy cruisers —probably the Mogami and Mikuma—sunk, and three or more others damaged and a light cruiser damaged. Three destroyers sunk and an additional destroyer possibly sunk. Four transports or cargo vessels hit by bombs and torpedoes, and one or more probably sunk. The losses in personnel from the sunken ships and bombed ships were, extremely heavy.
