Sergeant E. C. Coddington has been promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. He is attached to the 2nd Battalion, Hawke’s Bay _ Regiment. ' The engagement is announced of Joyce Evelyn, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs Tui Morgan, of Greytown, to William Thomas, third son of Mr and Mrs Luke Fletcher, of Foxton.
The engagement is announced of Heather Irene, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. McNally, Grey Street, Martinborough, to Frank Westwood, second son of Mr and Mrs F. Alpe, Tawaha. The death is announced from Melbourne by cablegram of Mr Bland Holt, the actor, at the age of 89. Deceased some fifty years ago regularly visited New Zealand with his diamatic company, and was well known to old theatregoer's in Masterton. The death occurred yesterday at Bunnythorpe of Mrs Johannah Goggin, relict of the late Mr James Goggin, formerly of Eketahuna, at the age of 86 years. Mr F. M. Goggin (Rongokokako) is a son and Mrs F. H. Baucke, also of Rongokokako, is a daughter. The Press Association’s correspondent at the South Pacific Area headquarters states that the first officer of the United States Navy to be appointed an admiral while serving in New Zealand is Captain, now RearAdmiral, Daniel J. Callaghan, U.S.N., Chief of Staff of the South Pacific force. Rear-Admiral Callaghan received news on Saturday of his appointment by President Roosevelt and the United States Senate and was duly sworn in.
The retirement of Mr E. O. (“Snowy”) Hales from the position of Public Trustee and the appointment of Mr W. G. Baird to succeed him were announced last evening by the Minister in charge of the Public Trust Office, Mr Mason. The position of Assistant Public Trustee vacated by Mr Baird is to be filled by the appointment of Mr F. Menneer, Chief Accountant to the Public Trust Office. The appointments of Mr Baird and Mr Menneer become effective from Wednesday. Mr Hales was a former wellknown Wellington representative footballer and played many times against Wairarapa.
