The Press Association’s correspondent at the South Pacific Area headquarters states that the first officer of the United States Navy to be appointed an admiral while serving in New Zealand is Captain, now RearAdmiral, Daniel J. Callaghan, U.S.N., Chief of Staff of the South Pacific force. Rear-Admiral Callaghan received news on Saturday of his appointment by President Roosevelt and the United States Senate and was duly sworn in.

The retirement of Mr E. O. (“Snowy”) Hales from the position of Public Trustee and the appointment of Mr W. G. Baird to succeed him were announced last evening by the Minister in charge of the Public Trust Office, Mr Mason. The position of Assistant Public Trustee vacated by Mr Baird is to be filled by the appointment of Mr F. Menneer, Chief Accountant to the Public Trust Office. The appointments of Mr Baird and Mr Menneer become effective from Wednesday. Mr Hales was a former wellknown Wellington representative footballer and played many times against Wairarapa.
