NOT BY-PASSED
MAIN BRITISH POSITIONS IN EGYPT ACCORDING TO CORRESPONDENT IN CAIRO. OPENING PHASE OF BATTLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1 p.m.) LONDON, June 23. The battle for Egypt has begun. General Rommel yesterday afternoon opened his attack on Mersa Matruh, which is held by the British Eighth Army. After the initial Axis attack the Allies counter-at-tacked westward of Mersa Matruh, says the Associated Press of Great Britain’s Cairo correspondent. Some action went on all night and at dawn fighting broke out with redoubled fury over wide stretches. Reuter’s Cairo correspondent says the battle began with two main clashes, one southwards of Mersa Matruh and the other further westwards, in which big enemy forces were involved. The correspondent adds that the enemy has not by-passed the main British positions. The Rome radio announced that General Baldasarre, an army corps commander, and General Piacenze were killed in the fighting in North Africa on Friday.
