The story of a duck which survived being frozen in the ice on the Canadian prairies only to be bagged a year later by a hunter is revealed by a bird banding recovery record received by the Department of Mines and x Resources. This bird, a male lesser scaup duck, was chopped from the ice at Minncdosa, Manitoba, during the 1940 freeze-up and, along with its mate, was sent to Winnipeg where both birds were marked with official numbered bands. The ducks were kept through the winter by the Winnipeg Public Parks Board, and were released during the spring of 1941.
