DAIRY FARMS

CLOSED DOWN IN NEW SOUTH WALES. ON ACCOUNT OF LACK OF MANPOWER. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, June 26. “At least 500 dairy farms are closed down and the stock on the majority of the others has been reduced by 20 to 30 per cent. Most of our efficient manpower has gone to munitions works and to the services.” This statement of the position of the dairying industry in New South Wales has been made by a prominent pastoralist. “Unless we get manpower, there will not be enough butter and cheese to go round next year,” he said. “It is all very well for the Minister of Supply, Mr Beasley, to say that there will continue to be sufficient food produced in Australia to satisfy the needs of the fighting forces and the civilian population. “As far as dairying is concerned this is. incorrect and it does not take int(O account our commitments to Britain.”
