MANY PARCELS

REACHING NEW ZEALAND WAR PRISONERS. IN ITALY AND GERMANY. (Special P.A. Correspondent.) LONDON, June 25. Parcels for New ■ Zealand prisoners of war in Germany and Italy are now reaching them in a steady flow;, said Mr C. B. Burdekin, head olj the prisoners of war department of New Zealand ■ House. “The position,” he said, “has greatly improved in the last three or four weeks as the result ■ of the British Red Cross securing additional ships for transferring large consignments of parcels held up in Lisbon which has been a bottle-neck for some time. The position was complicated throughout the winter when severe weather caused transport holdups throughout the Continent. “We have received several letters from our men recently, expressing thanks and appreciation, one man stating he received six tobacco parcels in 10 days—or a six months’ posting.” A typical letter was one from Private William Rawson, Hunterville, who is at Stalag 7A. He wrote to the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, Mr Jordan: “Thank you for the cigarette parcels, which were very much appreciated. New Zealand parcels are coming through very well indeed, I can assure you the boys never fail to appreciate what you have done for us at a time when we most needed it.” New Zealand House has received many acknowledgments from Stalag 18D, where there are numbers of New Zealanders. There is also an increasing number of acknowledgments from Italy.
