TWO ENEMY PLANES
9 DESTROYED BY AUCKLAND AIRMAN DURING RAIDS ON, WEDNESDAY. NIGHT. RECENT RESCUES FROM SEA. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 25. Two of the five enemy aircraft destroyed over Britain on Wednesday night were accounted for by Wing Commander I. S. Smith, D.F.C., Auckland. An Air Ministry communique states: “In a sweep over the western Channel this evening our fighters attacked enemy shipping off the coast of Brittany. Two of our fighters are missing.” Another complete crew of airmen forced down in the sea round the British Isles has been rescued by the air and sea rescue service. From bombing raids against Germany during June, the percentage of airmen forced into the sea on the return journey has been very small and well over half of those who crashed have been rescued.
