AIR OFFENSIVE
ATTACK ON U=BOAT BASE AT ST. NAZAIRE AND ON ENEMY AIRFIELDS. FIVE RAIDERS SHOT DOWN OVER BRITAIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 25. The R.A.F. attacked the submarine base at St Nazaire last night. Fighters also attacked enemy airfields. All our planes got back. Five German raiders were shot down in night raids on several places in East Anglia and the Midlands. Some damage is reported. Casualties were few. One of East Anglia’s many ancient churches was completely burnt out. It was built early in the twelfth century. The enemy rained hundreds of incendiaries on the church and within 15 minutes its tall spire was aflame. The Air Ministry states that R.A.F. bombers escorted by fighters on Tuesday night attacked an enemy aerodrome in Brittany. On the return journey our aircraft were attacked by enemy fighters, two of which were shot down into the sea. All our bombers returned safely, but one fighter is missing.”
