REPAIR WORK
ALREADY IN FELL SWING BIG FORCE OF MEN NOW AVAILABLE. MAYOR EXPRESSES APPRECIATION. Steps taken to carry out repair work were reported this morning at a meeting of borough and other representatives. Mr J. C. D. Mackley said every plumber had tpeen instructed to provide immediately two dozen chimney tops. Urgent repair work would be in hand generally this afternoon and it was hoped to have, with men from various camps and other sources, as many as 53 bricklayers and other tradesmen engaged. By this afternoon the whole of the repair work should be in full swing. Labour would be made available over the whole of the affected area. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, expressed the thanks of the community and the public generally to the authorities responsible for the promptitude with which men and material had been made available. Offers of assistance have been received from the mayors. of Napier, Dannevirke, Palmerston North, Hastings and Lower Hutt, and from the Red Cross Society.
