MASTERTON SHOPS REOPENED THIS AFTERNOON Good Progress in Clearing Earthquake Debris SEVERAL DANGEROUS BUILDINGS ROPED OFF The majority of Masterton retailers reopened their shops this afternoon, following the decision to allow pedestrians in the street during shopping daylight hours. Buildings roped off as dangerous include the front portion of the. Post Office, the Bank of New Zealand, the building occupied by Messrs W. H. Saunders, Shoosinith, and Wong Nam; the Trust building tenanted by Hendry & Dickson and Carpenter & Evans; the building occupied by Bullick-Blackmore, Ltd., and Hannahs, Ltd., and the building occupied by Misses Farrar & Ninnes, also the Fire Brigade Station. There is some doubt as to whether it will be possible to restore the Bank of New Zealand building and further expert opinion is to be obtained on the matter. In the meantime the building is closed. The Post Office has now established its main business, including the telegraph and .money order section, at the rear of the mail room, access to which is gained from ithe back of the building. Motor registrations are being dealt with in the Agricultural Department’s building. Considerable progress has been made in cleaning up the street and except for gaping’ holes in the front of several wrecked buildings, many of the shops present a more or less normal appearance. This morning and afternoon many parties of soldiers and others were removing debris from fallen chimneys in the residential area.
