GREYTOWN
BOROUGH COUNCIL RATES NOT INCREASED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A special meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held on Monday night, there being present the Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton), Crs. Blissett, Eagar, Farley, McKenna. Tate and Trotman. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Balfour and Wood. The Special Order agreeing to sell the gravel reserve to Mr W. J. Pope was confirmed and the transfer of this property was executed. The Town Clerk submitted a lengthy report on the Borough Finances and also the estimates for the current year. He stated that although the hospital levy had increased by 40 per cent, and owing to the gas works being closed down arrangements would have' to be made to meet the annual interest and sinking fund charges on the gas works loans of £598 17s. He was of the opinion that there would be no necessity to increase the rates. The interest and sinking fund charges had previouslj 7 been met out of the gas revenue. The recent revaluation of the Borough had resulted in an increase in the capital value of £6,000. This would bring in an additional £lO6 per annum from rates and various credits in the interest accounts, etc., could be used to make up the deficiency in the special rate collection. The Mayor explained the proposals in detail, and said that the suggestions made, if adopted, would stabilise the rates until the first of the gas loans, amounting to £6,000, matured in 1947. Apart from the gas works loans there was an overdraft of £2,000 in the gas works account at the bank and allowance had been made in the estimates to liquidate this by five equal yearly payments of £4OO. He stated that he was of opinion that the proposals should be adopted, and considered that, taking all the circumstances into consideration, they were fortunate in not having to increase the rates. This view was supported by the Council, and the Town. Clerk was directed to advertise the estimates and also to give notice of the Council’s intention to strike the same rates as last year.
