KILLED IN LIBYA

DISTINGUISHED NEW ZEALAND AIRMAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHANGAREI, June 2.3. Squadron Leader Derek Ward, D.F.C. and bar, who has been reported killed during air operations in Libya, was a son of Dr. S. H. Ward, Whangarei. He was the hero of an exploit, recorded in the volume, “Fighter Command,” issued by the Air Ministry, in which he flew a disabled plane to England after Dunkirk and fought off Messerschmitts over the Channel, despite lack of petrol and ammunition.
