MOTOR ACCIDENT
SOLDIERS INJURED. THREE SENT TO HOSPITAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, June 23. As the result of a car running into part of an infantry company marching along Abattoir Road, Oamaru, shortly before 5 o’clock today, three members of the company are in Oamaru Hospital suffering from extensive and severe bruising and six other soldiers received abrasions and bruises of a less serious nature. The injured in hospital are Major M. H. R. Jones, commanding officer of the; company, and Privates Alexander Dun. and Arthur Gordon Cairns. Their injuries are understood to be confined to bruises, which, it is expected, will not prove serious. The others injured are Privates J. D. Collins, L. A. Tavendale, A. M. Byrne, J. L. McKay, E. C. Elder and E. E. Beswarick. The car was driven by Mr H. ,L. Hopkins, Oamaru, who, with five passengers, was proceeding home from work along Abattoir Road toward the main road. In the vicinity of the railway crossing the car ran into the column of soldiers, who were marching in the same direction. The accident is believed to have been caused by the rays of the setting sun temporarily blinding the driver of the car.
