SAVING PETROL

VOLUNTARY ACTION BY FARMERS TRUCKS USED IN PREFERENCE TO TRACTORS. A patriotic spirit has been shown by a number of farmers in the district regarding the use of petrol, which, it is stated, might well be followed by others. In normal times tractors have become almost universally used for ploughing and are often used for lighter farm work, which could be done with a truck. Several owners of tractors have stopped using them for the duration of the war owing to shortage of labour and other difficulties arid are using their trucks for top-dressing, etc. In other cases, farmers are making greater use of their trucks and only using their tractors for the heavier type of farm work. In each instance there has been a considerable saving of motor spirit. Another patriotic gesture has been made by suppliers of milk to factories. Many of them have voluntarily asked for a reduction in their petrol allocation for vehicles conveying milk to the factories during the winter period. Here again, a saving of petrol has been effected.
