CIVIC SUNDAY SERVICE AT ST. JOHN’S • CHURCH. (“Times-Age” Special.) For the first time yesterday was observed as Civic Sunday by St. John’s Church, when members of Borough Council, Post and Telegraph staff and Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the service. The lessons were read by Councillor R. R. P. Hardy and Mr J. W. Holland, of the P. and T. staff. Special hymns were sung and the Rev. J, R. Higgs preached a very interestingsermon. Golf. The following were the best scores in the first round of the stableford competition played on the Gum Grove links on Saturday:-—H. Lovegrove 35, H. McCarty 31, G. O’Neale and W. H. Rowles 30. Football. A Greytown-Carterton football team played a soldiers’ team on Saturday and won by 24 points to nil. Personal. The oldest resident of Featherston, Mrs Jane Vile, celebrated her 92nd birthday yesterday. Born in Essex, England, in 1850, she arrived with her parents, Mr and Mrs R. Bright, in New Zealand at the age of five. In 1867 she married the late Josiah Vile and came to reside on the Rimutaka farm. Of a family of 12, eight are still living. There are 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Four grandsons are serving overseas. A granddaughter is engaged in nursing and her husband is overseas. Two grandsons are in the New Zealand Army. - Very active for her age Mrs Viles looks back on a long life of usefulness. COSV THEATRE SENSATIONAL DRAMA. The sensational drama, “Waterloo Bridge,” will be shown tonight. The leading roles are taken by Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor.
