SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED
FREE TEA AT Y.M.C.A. ROOMS.
The free tea to men of the services given by the proprietors and staff of the Wairarapa Steam Laundry at the Y.M.C.A. Rooms ■ yesterday was attended by many representatives of the forces. Two sittings were necessary. Mr J. M. Douglas, representing the Directors of the Y.M.C.A., and Mrs Moss, on behalf of the Wairarapa Steam Laundry,. welcomed those present. The usual devotional session was observed, followed by a song contributed by Mrs Morton and a recitation by Miss Thomas. After tea an adjournment was made to the lounge where, with Mrs Morton and others at the piano, a pleasant time was spent in community singing. Representatives of both the Army and Air Force expressed the thanks of their respective companies to the ladies and to the Y.M.C.A. for providing the splendid repast and for the opportunity given to spend a happy time together.
Card Tournament The weekly card tournament held by the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Band Room on Saturday night. There was a fair attendance and a most enjoyable time was spent. The prizes were won as follow: —Ladies: Mrs Armstrong 1, Mrs A. Paterson 2. Men: Mr C. Holland 1, Mr W. Morris 2. Farewell Gathering. The Belvedere Schoolroom was crowded on Saturday night when thei residents of the district met to farewell Mr and Mrs W. Taylor and Mrs Taylor Senr., who will leave this week to take up residence 'in Palmerston North. The time was occupied in dancing, the music for which was supplied by Mrs Rogers. Extras were played by Mrs W. Knowles and Mr C. Bell. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr W. Knowles. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss B. Zabell and Mr Hannah. Messrs A. H. Callister and W. G. Thomas on behalf of the suppliers to the Belvedere Dairy Factory, stated that Mr Taylor had been a splendid settler. ' Mr A. E. Reid, on behalf of the settlers of Belvedere and Carrington, referred to the interest Mr and Mrs Taylor Junr. and Mrs Taylor Senr. had always taken in the welfare of the district, and he hoped that they would be spared to continue their good work in their new home town. He asked Mr W. Taylor to accept a travelling bag, Mrs Taylor a hand bag and Mrs Taylor Senr. an eiderdown quilt. Mr Taylor suitably returned thanks. A buffet supper was served and a happy gathering concluded at midnight with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee will be held tonight.
Heavy Frosts. A very heavy white frost was experienced in Carterton on Sunday morning and again this morning. Personal Items. The many friends of Mrs Hayden will be pleased to learn that her health is improving. She is an inmate of the Croydon Hospital. Mr A. Desmond, who had been an inmate of the Croydon Hospital, has returned to his home. Hockey. The Carterton Home Guard team beat an Army team at Carrington Park on Saturday by 9 goals to nil. Messrs L. Gallon and J. Fisher were the referees. REGENT THEATRE ARMY COMEDY. The hilarious army comedy, “Caught in the Draft,” will be shown tonight. It is considered the “laugh blitz” of the year, with Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour in the' chief roles.
