“ARE YOU SWING?”
<> —. — CURRENT QUESTION IN FRANCE. FAITH IN ALLIED VICTORY. “Are you Swing?” asked by one Frenchman of aonther, means in plain language, “Are you for the Allies?” The answer is invariably yes. Swing, coming from the United States and known to be popular in Britain, represents the Allied cause. It is extraordinary, too, what a number of things can be said in favour of swing music in the presence of Germans in France! The enthusiasm of the French for Britain can hardly be realised, say those who have recently escaped from France. The exploits of our airmen have become legendary, to say nothing of our commandos. In occupied France everyone tries to help a British airman who bales out, even though such help exposes the Frenchman to the death penalty. In unoccupied France, where there are still a number of British, everything is done to help our nationals. Swaggering Germans told the French in June, 1940, that Britain’s days were numbered. At the same time Vichy politicians were predicting that we should be vanquished within three weeks. When Britain, left by Vichy to stand and face the fight alone, smashed the air attack of the foe in the Battle of Britain, all the French nation was moved to admiration, and from that day resistance began. The real French were proud that other Frenchmen, answering the appeal of General de Gaulle, were fighting on, and today, following on the brilliant attack of the commandos on St. Nazaire, confidence in ultimate British triumph is complete.
