EMDEN BLASTED

NIGHT ATTACK BV BRITISH HEAVY BOMBERS BIG FIRES LEFT BURNING IN DOCK AREA. NO ENEMY FIGHTERS ENCOUNTERED. LONDON, June 7. Strong forces of R.A.F. bombers raided Emden last night. The attack apparently took the German defences by surprise. Although the conditions were favourable, not one fighter was seen. Many of our biggest four-engine bombers took part in the raid, including Lancasters, Stirlings and Halifaxes. Big fires were left burning, especially in the dock area. Other planes kept up the attack on enemy aerodromes in the Low Countries. "We lost nine bombers and one fighter. Two enemy raiders were destroyed last night, one off the south-east coast of England and one over its own base in Holland. Bombs were dropped at scattered points, but little damage and few casualties resulted.
