ST. ANDREW SOCIETY
DANCE IN MASONIC . HALL SOME POPULAR ITEMS. NEW APPOINTMENTS MADE. The monthly gathering of the Saint Andrew Society, held in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening, attracted a large attendance of members and their friends, including a considerable number of members of the forces. The Dashing White Sergeant again proved itself' the most popular of the dances on the Society’s programme. The vigour and enthusiasm with which it was entered into, and the fact that two Eightsome Reels were called for during’ the evening, are sufficient proof that the Scots spirit that has always marked the society’s gatherings continues to be sustained. During the evening, Mrs H. M. Morton gave an artistic rendering of the auld Scots sang “Castles in the Air.” In response to insistent applause, Mrs Morton sang “Ca’ the yowes tae the knowes.” which proved equally enjoyable. The Chieftainess, Mrs Robert Miller, entertained with two of her inimitable recitations. The Chief, Mr H. Mackenzie Douglas, referred to the loss sustained by the society since the previous gathering in the departure from Masterton of Mr William C. Mann, and Miss Rise Robinson. Mrs H. M. Morton had kindly agreed to take Mr Mann’s place as instructor and conductor of the Ladies Choir, which was a sufficient guarantee that the choir’s progress would continue. Mrs Alan Graham had accepted the responsible position of musical director. ; * It was announced that the next gathering would be held on Saturday, July 4, and a meeting of the council on Friday, June 19. ' „ The singing of “Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem brought a highly successful gathering to a close. Thanks are due to Mrs J. Y. .Douglas for her skilful work at the piano for much of the dancing, and also to Chief’s Piper T. Pickett and Piper W. N. Mackenzie Douglas for providing Pi A S dance practice called for this evening has been cancelled, owing, it is understood, to no piner being available. Attention is drawn to an advertisement to this effect in this issue.
