CARTERTON
THEFT OF BICYCLES MANY LOCAL VICTIMS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Despite the warning issued by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., that he would in future send to gaol any person found guilty of the theft of a bicycle, local residents continue to have their machines stolen. Cases are recorded where machines which had been left only for a few minutes in the street have been “lifted” by some thief. Gifts Appreciated. The following letter dated 10/1/42 from a soldier attached to the Middle East Forces has been received by a Carterton lady:—“While a patient in No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital, I received a parcel sent by you to cheer up the patients on Christmas Day. Believe me, it did cheer me up. What with the contents of your parcel and the magnificent Christmas dinner we had, I spent the afternoon of Christmas Day almost in a state of coma. I cannot thank you too much for the parcel of food and also for the Christmas wishes. May I also say that the New Zealand staff of the hospital gave marvellous attention to a solitary Englishman. New Zealand is now truly in the front line and knowing too well what this means, I sincerely pray that you and all the people of New Zealand are spared the sorrow and misery that this has meant to my home country. So may I wish you, although rather belatedly, the best of fortune for 1942.” Personal Items. ' Mr and Mrs C. Nilsen, who have been the guests of Mrs S. Swan, left yesterday for their home in Nelson.
