MANY DEATHS
IN LUFTWAFFE RAID ON CANTERBURY SHOPPING CENTRE BADLY DAMAGED. NO NEWS ABOUT CATHEDRAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, June 1. A heavy death roll resulted when about 25 German bombers raided Canterbury last night. Fires extensively damaged the shopping centre, and it is believed that Canterbury Cathedral was one of the Luftwaffe’s objectives. No information is at present available as to whether the cathedral was damaged. It is estimated that a total of fifty planes was over Britain last night. A German communique states: “As a reprisal for the terror raid on Cologne strong Luftwaffe formations attacked the bishopric seat of Canterbury, with ■ a thousand high explosive and fire bombs, causing large fires.” It is learned in London that immediately after the raid on Cologne, Himmler. chief bf the Gestapo, assumed control of the entire air raid precautions services of Germany.
