AIRCRAFT-CARRIERS

MORE TO BE BUILT IN U.S.A. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 31. The chairman of the House Naval Affairs Committee, Mr Vinson, indicated that the Navy will soon ask for a new multi-million dollar programme for aircraft-carrier construction. The new programme will be imposed on the existing programme under which at least 11 carriers are building to augment the seven carriers now operating. He declared that the Navy would balance the increased carrier force with more destroyers, long-range submarines and fighting ships. The programme did not signalise the extinction of battleships, which still retain their importance, he added.
