The Rt Hon J. G. Coates returned to Wellington from Auckland yesterday. Miss McGrath, Seatoun, spent the weekend with Mrs Miller Hope, Masterton.
Mrs J. Mills, Days Bay, is staying with her mother, Mrs A. P. Bennett, Essex Street, Masterton. The Hon D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Supply, will return to Wellington tomorrow from the south. The Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, will return to Wellington tomorrow from the South Island. The Hon J. G. Barclay, Minister of Agriculture, left Wellington yesterday for Dunedin to open the annual conference of the Otago Provincial Farmers’ Union.
Mr R. G. Bishop, Southbridge, president of the North Canterbury branch of the Farmers’ Union, has been appointed South Island representative of the union on the National Pig Council. Cabled advice received by Mrs T. N. Thomas, 51 Villa Street, Masterton, states that her son, Sergeant Eric Eastwood, R.N.Z.A.F., has arrived safely in England. His two brothers, Ptes. John and Ernest Eastwood are now in Syria. The death has occurred of the Rev. W. T. Hooper, of Miramar, whose health had been failing for some years. Mr Hooper, who was born at Moontra, South Australia, in 1868, came as a child to Taranaki with his parents, and in his teens started what was to be a long and distinguished service in the ministry. He took a two years’ theological course at Way College, Adelaide, and after his marriage returned to New Zealand. Some 38 years ago Mr Hooper started home mission work at Winton. Further appointments followed, and during the 1918 epidemic he gave excellent service at Riccarton.
