The Charlton Gun.
With reference to the approval in Australia of the Charlton gun—an improvised light machine-gun invented by a New Zealander, Mr W. Charlton, the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) stated on Saturday that the gun was in production in New Zealand. Mr Charlton, the Premier added, had submitted his invention to the Government, and, after being thoroughly tested, it had been adopted. The Government had also made arrangements for Mr Charlton to go to Australia. Central School Dance. The fortnightly old-time dance under the auspices of the Central School Parents’ Association was held in the Central School on Saturday evening. The hall was well filled and with Mr W. R. Nicol as M.C. the gathering went with its usual happy swing. The) music was supplied by a member of Barnes’s Rhythm Boys. Extras were played by Mr Thompson. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Private Todd and partner. Supper was served by the ladies’ committee. The committee extend to all men in uniform a! hearty welcome under the privileges provided at these gatherings. Empire Broadcasts. The attention of short-wave listeners is called to an extensive change in the schedule of transmitters which came into force last night from the 8.8. C. Transmitters to which listeners have been accustomed to tune for many years have entirely disappeared, and have been replaced by those of the comparatively new “R” series. The Pacific service opens at 5.0 p.m. and closes down at 8.15‘p.m. Best reception will probably be obtained from transmitters GRS (7.065 mc/s), GRE (15.375 mc/s), and GRD (15.45 mc/s), changing from lower to higher frequency as the, transmission progresses. |
