LOAN APPEAL
IN MASTERTON DISTRICT
POOR RESPONSE SO FAR.
MR T. JORDAN SPEAKS AT LOCAL THEATRES.
An appeal for the immediate and generous support of the public to the Liberty Loan was made by Mr T. Jordan on Saturday night, when he addressed the audiences at the Regent and State theatres. He was accompanied by Mr E. L. Nicholson, representing the National Savings District Committee.
Mr Jordan drew attention to the urgency of the appeal, which, he said, did not appear to be fully realised by the community as a whole. Liberty Bonds had been on sale in the streets for more than a week and the result was not very creditable —about £450. The total for the district was about £lOOO. He had just received a letter from a small town in Surrey, with the population of Carterton, and in Warships’ Week this community of 2,000 had found £70,000. Mention was also made of the wonderful performance of the small investor in England in buying savings certificates. Prior to the war, this form of investment attracted large sums, but from the outbreak of war, for every certificate that had been issued prior to the war, 850 had since been issued. The actual amount subscribed by these saving certificate investors in 21- years of war was £436,500,000.
Mr Jordan quoted figures indicating Canada’s contribution in the war effort and said this was something .for New Zealand to take as an example. New Zealand was getting an additional 15 per cent for its wool and he had no doubt that the £2,000,000 this provid-' ed would make a welcome addition to the loan. Mr Jordan drew attention to the figures recently published of deposits at present lying in the banks and said the lesson from these was obvious. He asked for earnest consideration and support of the Prime Minister’s appeal.
