POST=WAR CRICKET

OPINION IN LANCASHIRE.

TWO-DAY MATCHES LIKELY.

The prospects of cricket at Old Trafford after the war were discussed at the annual meeting of the Lancashire County Cricket Club, ahd a suggestion for two-day matches which would have definite results was put forward. Mr T. A. Higson, chairman of the general committee, said the club was proceeding with the woik of demolishing the damaged buildings on the ground, and cleaning up generally, so that the architects and contractors would have a clear field when the time came for rebuilding. Discussing what sort of cricket should be played after the war, Mr Higson said he did not think the public would want a return to the slow play of three-day matches. On the other hand, two-day matches iis they had been played were the next hardest thing to hard labour and a great strain on the players. As ah alternative he suggested a scheme of two-day matches which would be attractive and have definite results. They should be played on Saturday and Monday aild Wednesday and Thursday. There shotild be one innings only for each side, and no points if the match was not finished. A result might be reached early in the second day, and the side which was leading on the first innings would have the option of saying that the match shotild go on until 6.30. Whichever side then won would get d bonds of five points. Mr E. Tyidesley said he agreed that two-day cricket would be the cricket after the war. He thought the scheme of one innings each, with a second innings if the sides were got out cheaply, would be quite satisfactory.
