BEING WON SLOWLY

BATTLE OF ATLANTIC IN SPITE OF AMERICAN COASTAL LOSSES. NEED OF MORE PATROL CRAFT. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 30. Naval experts declare that the United States is slowly winning the main campaign in the Battle of the Atlantic in spite of the heavy Josses which have been inflicted on the American coastal shipping by submarines, says the Washington correspondent of the Associated Press. The experts emphasise, however, that only steadily-increasing production in both warships and merchantmen could clinch ultimate victory. The greatest need is for more defensive craft such as submarine-chasers, patrol bombers, and blimps, manned by experienced personnel. The Rio de Janeiro correspondent of the United Press says that the Brazilian armed forces are credited unofficially with the destruction of two Axis submarines and the capture of another submarine and a German mother ship disguised as a Dutch vessel. The United States Navy Department today announced the sinking of three more medium-sized United States merchantmen. Two of them were torpedoed in the Atlantic and the other in the Caribbean area. Survivors were landed from each vessel.
