GIBRALTAR COMMAND
LORD GORT'S SUCCESSOR. GENERAL MASON-MACFARLANE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 31. Major-General F. N. Mason-Macfar-lane has been appointed Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Gibraltar in succession to Lord Gort, who was recently appointed Governor and Com-mander-in-Chief of Malta. General Mason-Macfarlane, who is 52, was promoted acting major general on the outbreak of war, and went with Lord Gort to France as Director of Military Intelligence to the B.E.F. During the withdrawal to Dunkirk, he was placed in command of a hastily- assembled force to hold the river crossings on. the British right flank. He was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the D.S.O. Following the Dunkirk evacuation, he was appointed to command the troops in Gibraltar. Last June, when Germany, attacked Russia, he headed a British military mission to Moscow. Throughout the past year, he has kept when possible in the closest touch with the Russian High Command.
