MANY ILLITERATES
IN THE UNITED STATES MULTITUDES KEPT FROM ARMY & NAVY. GOVERNMENT STUDYING PLANS FOR EDUCATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day,11.40 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 29. • There is a startling number of illiterates in the United States. In a broad sense illiteracy has kept multitudes from the Army and Navy. President Roosevelt made this statement at a Press conference. He added: “It is riot because they ate morons, but because they lack an opportunity for education. Government experts are now studying plans for the education of these people to enable therh to become militarily Useful;” Mr Roosevelt agreed with a questioner that under-nourishrnent was a factor in the sub-development of mentality. NO SURPRISES SPRUNG THUS FAR BY ROMMEL. (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) CAIRO, May 29. It is authoritatively stated that the Libyan battle is centred in Knightsbridge, but that the British forces are still at Bir Hakheim and Gazala. Every position is potentially menaced in this type of warfare, but the result of the battle probably will not be known for a day or two. General Rommel thus far does not appear to have accomplished anything which General AUchinleck and General Ritchie would not have anticipated.
