FEATHERSTON

KARITANE HOSPITAL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the House Committee of the Sir Truby and Lady King Karitane Hospital was held at Rototowai. Mrs Jowett, president of the Wellington Plunket Society, was in the chair. Others present were Mesdames Firth (Wellington)', Blundell, Baker and Miss Martin (Martinborough), Q. Donald, H. Bloxam and J. G. McKenzie (Featherston) and also the presidents of the Masterton, Carterton and Greytown societies. Mrs Blundell was appointed president and Mesdames Q. Donald and J. G. McKenzie joint secretaries. Mrs Jowett reported that the van destroyed by fire would be replaced at an early date. It was left to Mrs Q. Donald to attend to the necessary furnishings for the annex. OBITUARY MR W. J. MURPHY. The death occurred on Monday at the residence of his brother, Mr Staff Murphy, Waite Street, Featherston, of Mr William John Murphy, at the qge of 75 years. Mr Murphy was not married and had spent all his life in Featherston. The funeral, took place at the Featherston Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The services at the house and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. J. R. Higgs. The pall bearers were Messrs Staff Murphy, A. Murphy, G. Murphy, G. Gain, S. Hodder, T. Delegat. Among the wreathes was one froD the Featherston Fire Brigade. , WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING AT PAHAUTEA. (“Times-Age” _ Special.) The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Pahautea Hall, Mrs Ross presiding over a good attendance. Four new members were welcomed. The competitions resulted as follows: Best bloom, Miss Frew 1, Mrs Ross 2. Nut loaf, Mrs Hubbard and Mrs Farquhar (equal) 1. The hostesses were Mesdames Grant and Farquhar. League of Mothers. ' At the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers, Mrs Arch Clark presided over a good attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Welles, Cundy, Bladen and Benton. , An interesting talk on “Personal Preparedness” was given by Miss Pickett of the Housing Department, Wellington, who was accorded a vote of thanks. The hostesses were Mesdames Fellingham, Ruane, Wendon and G. Burt. Personal. Mr and Mrs W. H. Rowles have received a cable from their son, Ser-geant-Observer W. H. Rowles, stating that he has arrived at a place in the Mediterranean. Liberty . Loan Appeal. The Liberty Loan appeal held yesterday afternoon was a great success, and the sum of £lOO was realised. The thanks of the committee are due to the members of the Pipe Eand of the Ist Battalion of the Scottish Regiment, who paraded the town and played selections. Those who were unable to purchase bonds at the street appeal yesterday are requested to call early at the Post Office. COSY THEATRE “GAUCHO SERENADE.” Tomorrow night’s programme will be headed by that excellent story of the West, “Gaucho Serenade,” featuring Gene A.utry, Smiley Burnette and Mary Lee. “Barnyard Follies” is the associate picture starring Rufe Davis and Mary Lee. Episode 7of “The Drums of Fu Manchu” will also be shown.
