OPENED BY THE GERMANS IN LIBYA
Great Tank Battle Raging South of Tobruk BOTH SIDES THROWING IN AIR FORCES ENEMY THRUST MET BY STRONG ARMY LONDON, May 27. News from Libya states that, following on a new German attack, a great tank battle is raging in an area 45 miles south of Tobruk. A special communique issued from British headquarters in Cairo says that our mechanised patrols met large advancing forces of the Africa Corps and that a great tank battle is raging about 45 miles inland from Tobruk. The Germans seem to have chosen this line of attack in the hope of outflanking Tobruk on the south, Both sides are throwing their air forces into the battle. An observer says the first enemy move was made during the night. Whatever the Germans are trying to do, they will find a strong army facing them. The nevz German action follows on months of preparation which, together with the blitz against Malta, has enabled them to build up their strength to something like that of the army defeated bv (i-enera.l Auchinlee.k’s forces last winter.
