NEW DATE FOR MELBOURNE CUP. MR CURTIN RIDICULES OBJECTIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, May 26. Objections by sportsmen to the holding of the Melbourne Cup on other than the traditional first Tuesday in November were condemned by the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, today. (The V.R.C. authorities have just decided that this year’s Melbourne Cup should be run on Saturday, November 7, because of the ban on racing on weekdays. The Derby is fixed for the previous Saturday, October 31). Mr Curtin said racing folk did, not hesitate to postpone the running -ef the cup to another date because the course was inundated on the traditional Tuesday a few years ago. He added: “The threatened invasion of this continent seems to me a much more vital matter than a deluge. I sincerely hope that whatever sporting events Australians are contemplating for next November will not distract men from working for and serving their country in its hour of need.”
