The Russians are consolidating their gains in the Kharkov area,/ according to the Soviet midday communique, which reports defensive battles in the Isyum-Barven-kova sector to the south-east. Marshal Timoshenko’s drive on Kharkov is now in its fourteenth day and the Isyum-Barvenkova battle is said to have reached a new peak of intensity. In the last three days the Russians have beaten off repeated German attacks. The Soviet defenders in the south are smashing the German offensive in the Isyum-Barvenkova sector, the Moscow radio declares. The Germans are suffering heavy losses in this area, where they are using large quantities of tanks, artillery and planes. After an artillery barrage and mass bombing, 150 German tanks attacked, followed by trench mortars and infantry. These attacks were repulsed. More than 100 Germans were killed and many tanks and planes were destroyed. The Red Air Force is constantly attacking.
