WHEAT CAMPAIGN
PROGRESS IN WAIRARAPA OVER 3000 ACRES PROMISED TO DATE. AREAS IN VARIOUS COUNTIES. “Figures which came to hand today have now raised the area promised for wheat next season to just over 3000 acres,” stated Mr N. Lamont, Department of Agriculture, today. “Very few canvassers have yet to send in their lists and it seems unlikely that, this total will be very greatly increased, unless many of the farmers who have so far refused to. co-operate will reconsider their decisions. Recent Press reports would suggest that this year’s deficiencies in wheat supply may be made up from Australia but there is absolutely no guarantee that we can rely on the same source for next year and it is surely foolish, or worse, to refuse to take the necessary steps now to provide for ourselves. “Three thousand acres is still less than the district grew in the last war, despite the much greater production potential of the present day, resulting from the greater development of machine power. Viewed in relation to OJVf needs, the area is a very inadequate contribution indeed. “The position by district is as follows: — Masterton County. Acres. Rangitumau, Kopuaranga 72 Opaki, Mt. Bruce 749 Solway, Upper Plain 4bb Te Ore Ore ... q ° Homebush, Te Whiti 1,803 South Wairarapa County. Taratahi. Carterton 162 Parkvale, Ponatahi Gladstone, Longbush ” 303 Featherston County. Greytown, Tauherenikau 110 Morison’s Bush ™ Featherston Kahutara 9qq Martinborough Otaraia, Pirinoa 6 862 Other localities 85 Wairarapa total 3,053
