LIBERTY LOAN

PROGRESS REVIEWED MUCH BETTER RESPONSE IMPERATIVE. APPEAL BY PRIME MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Reviewing the progress of the Liberty Loan last night the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, said that while £8,000,000 out of the £15,000,000 aimed at had been received in the first three weeks, a much better response was imperative in the next few if New Zealand was to play her full part in the immense war programme now under way. “We in New Zealand today have our backs to the wall,” said Mr Fraser. “This war is everybody’s war, and the support of every section of the community is needed to win it. It is my plain duty as Prime Minister to see that New Zealand meets its war obligations, and to do this the £15,000,000 Liberty Loan must be fully subscribed within the time allowed. The time is now short— only six days to go. Approximately £7,000,000 is still required —over £1,000,000 a day. The money is available in New Zealand, and it only remains for those who have it to divert it to what is today the foremost purpose—the winning of the war. New Zealanders have ever been to the fore in the giving of their sons, and they will not now, I am sure, be behindhand in providing the financial support necessary to enable those same sons to win in this fight for liberty. “All other parts of the British Commonwealth have met fully the demands upon them to maintain and equip their own forces and New Zealand cannot do less.”
